Feed your body. Change your life.

  personal note from darshana

In case you were wondering, the cleanse is going great.
I am pleasantly surprised by my own experience. I don't feel deprived at all, I am completely satisfied and nourished and I love that I'm immersing myself in fruits and veggies deluxe!

Even if you aren't in our Spring Cleanse, you can still use the detoxifying effect of foods to make changes to your health!

At Fruition Women's Health we know that both the quality and quantity of the food that we eat matters. Knowing how much of a certain food to eat is extremely important because almost any food can be used as medicine. (Yup- that chocolate craving can be healing if you eat the amount YOUR body needs at that given time)… but more on that in another newsletter.

This week I want to focus on QUALITY. I already know what you're going to say: "ORGANIC FOOD IS SO EXPENSIVE!" A common joke about Whole Foods Markets is that you use your "whole paycheck" to buy groceries!

The practice of eating well is a process. Maybe you're not 100% organic at this point and that's totally cool. Simply maintain your strong intentions to be healthier and do what you can. Read below to learn what foods you might want to focus on purchasing from the organic section.

TOP FOODS TO EAT ORGANIC
Doing our best to eat healthy

There are so many options when it comes to choosing food. Many of my clients often wonder:

"Should I buy the organic version or the commercial version"?

Of course I want to say GO ORGANIC ALL THE TIME. But I understand that it might not be realistic for many of us to do that. I mean, the market price for a ½ pint of blueberries can sometimes be up to $7.00. Even I pass on that one and choose a different fruit that week.

But eating organic is an important issue. Regarding our personal health, the use of pesticides and herbicides has toxic effects on our body and can cause damage to
our cells, our brains, our hormones and more.

And what about the health of the earth? Using these chemicals creates more toxins in the environment. Our air, water and soil quality is going down the tubes and the toxins kill off beneficial insects. For example there's an epidemic in our country right now affecting local honeybees. These bees are necessary to help grow many common foods like apples and almonds, and yet, environmental toxins are making this impossible.

An amazing movie on this topic is The Future of Food. It's shocking and fascinating! I recommend it.

But back to the point. I know many of you are facing this organic vs. commercial food dilemma.

Here is a list of "must haves" when it comes to organic.

Strawberries – This wonderful, decadent, sensual fruit does not carry well from the farm to your super market. Therefore, farmers use many layers of chemicals to help with the transport. So buying at your local farmers market or from grocers that carry strawberries from local organic farms is best. Also, try to eat strawberries in season. They will be much sweeter!

Corn –is one of the top genetically modified foods. GE or GMO food has lots of toxic chemicals added to it. Plus we eat A LOT OF IT (an average of 11 pounds per year PER PERSON). We eat corn not just off the cob. It sneaks into so many foods in the form of corn syrup. Read labels on foods such as boxed cereal, soups, condiments and packaged food. Go Organic with corn! Also read The Omnivore's Dilemma. The story on corn is fascinating.

Peaches – have the reputation of being the fruit with the highest level of pesticides of all conventional produce. I've even heard that some of the pesticides that are being used are illegal. Yikes!

Milk – OK. I'll get on my "soap-box" for this one. Many brands of commercial milk contain bovine growth hormone and antibiotics. The hormones in dairy can affect the hormones in our own bodies, which can lead to numerous hormonal related health concerns. Women are especially susceptible.

Green Beans – contain over 60 different types of pesticides.

Rice - domestic rice is often farmed with heavy doses of pesticides. Buy organic in the bulk aisle and store in a mason jar. It lasts a long time!

Bananas – have to travel a long way to get to us. Therefore, heavy chemicals are used to preserve during shipping. One of these is called Thiabendazole, which has been known to damage the brain and nervous system.

Baby Food - Babies are extraordinarily susceptible to pesticides. It's so easy to make your own sweet potato mash… really!

Apples - Apples are soaked in pesticides. I recently read that the pesticides in apples go all the way to the core… And we thought peeling them would help. I guess not.

Are you ready to make changes to your health but don't know where to start? Let us help! We'd love to support you. At FWH we are a team of food coaches and health counselors who will teach you how to transition food principles into practice.
